If you're planning a PCT section- or thru-hike (or ride),
you've probably got lots of questions. And while the plethora
of guidebooks and trail narratives available from our store
can answer many of them, there's nothing quite like that personal
touch.
Listed below you'll find the names and e-mail addresses for
PCT veterans who've volunteered to "mentor" those
of you in the planning stages of your journeys. Got a question
or concern? Drop one of our mentors a note and the two of
you can take it from there.
Warner Springs Monty
Warner Springs Monty has hiked over 10,000 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail since 2004. He is the only one to hike it with under a 5 lb baseweight. He loves helping people plan hikes and plan gear and loves helping thru-hikers realize it's only about one cent per mile to join the PCTA. He is also hiking the PCT in 2010. Contact him at montypct@gmail.com .
Dan Feldman "Achilles"
I'm 31 years old and currently live in Washington, DC. I thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail northbound in 2007, a trip which took me 130 days. This is probably on the faster side as far as the average time for a PCT thru-hike goes. I also thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail southbound in 2002. I am a physical therapist and know a good deal about anatomy, physiology, and hiking-related injuries that long distance backpackers often sustain. I'm happy to help prospective PCT hikers in any way I can! I can be contacted at podin04@mac.com. View my trail journal.
Easy
My name is Easy, I hiked as a 24-year old in 2007. I planned the whole trip in three to four weeks, so email me if you are considering a less planning-intensive approach. I was helped immensely by mentors on this list, so please email me so I can pay it forward. If you're unsure but thinking about hiking the trail-- DO IT!! Cheers, Easy. will.hiltz@gmail.com
Ned Tibbits Ned Tibbits, is the Director and chief instructor of Mountain Education. Ned thru-hiked the PCT in 1974 at the age of 17 and the CDT in 1980.
Ned and his wife, Juliee, offer, free, 3-day weekend Snow Courses during the winter months to help train and prepare thru hikers for the skills needed for snow-hiking along the PCT (over-snow navigation, avalanche awareness, and self-arrest training, to name just a few).
"Mad" Monte (PCT '77)
Mad Monte
thru-hiked the PCT in 1977. Since then, he's managed to do a
few PCT section-hikes each year and occasionally ventures over
the Continental Divide Trail for a section-hike or two as
well. A resident of
Olympia
,
Washington
(where he
lives with his wife), Monte's a great resource for section-
and thru-hikers alike.
