Saturday Awards Dinner Keynote Speaker
Mark Larabee, 46, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The Oregonian, Oregon's largest daily newspaper. In 2005, Larabee and photographer Ian Malkasian walked across Oregon on the Pacific Crest Trail to chronicle the environmental and financial challenges facing the trail. His 13-part series and daily blog captured the beauty of the wilderness, the kindness of people, and the incredible mental challenge of long-distance hiking. Larabee lives in Portland Oregon with his wife, Carol Sim, and their yellow lab, Hallie.
Free Friday Evening Presentation
Don’t miss this inspirational evening presentation by David “The Runner” Horton, Ph.D., who ran the entire 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail in 2005; running more than 40 miles per day for 66 consecutive days to complete the PCT in record time. Horton is Professor of Health Sciences & Kinesiology, at Liberty
University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and featured in the award-winning documentary, The Runner.
Trail Class Highlights include:
- Celebrate PCT and PCTA accomplishments from 2008 and hear what’s planned for 2009 at the PCTA’s Annual Meeting.
- Enjoy hiking panel discussions on three distinct sections of the PCT:
- Desert Strategies: Crossing Southern California's Arid Terrain (Donna Saufley, moderator)
- Navigating the Sierra High Country: Preparation for Success in the "Range of Light" (Rees Hughes, moderator)
- Weather's A-Coming for Oregon and Washington, plus a few snow tales from the October 1 Blizzard of '07 (Barney “Scout” Mann , moderator)
- Take a photo tour with Glen Van Peski as he presents “A Day in the Secret Life of an Ultralight Hiker”.
- PCTA's Southern California Representative, Suzanne Wilson presents “The Great Baikal Trail - A New Adventure for Hikers and Volunteers”. She recounts her experience in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and the first trails association in Russia, the Great Baikal Trail Association.
- Additional classes on the trail corridor, land management updates, birding basics, photography and much more.
