Trail conditions and closures

Welcome to the official page for PCT trail closure and conditions information. The trail closure section is closely stewarded by the PCTA. The trail conditions section is crowdsourced; it depends on your contributions. Please report trail conditions. These pages can be sorted by location and type. Check back often for the latest information. Closure information is available offline at the conditions hotline: 1-888-PC-TRAIL. For water information, please visit the PCT Water Report.

By: Leif Hovin

Scouting report has logs blocking the PCT from Lolo Pass to Wahtum Lake, in Oregon – Section G. This is from 2124.4 MP to 2141.5 MP. (Pacific Crest Trail Data Book, 6th Ed) Volunteer trail crews will be clearing the trail in the coming weeks. The trail is passable for hikers, but may of the logs are on steep ground, making detours challenging, if not impossible.

Muir Trail Ranch

By: Marianna

I emailed the Muir Trail Ranch about food and resupply as well as trail conditions and they stated in their reply the following. “Since we’re not open for resupply yet we haven’t talked with anyone who’s actually been on the trail about conditions. The snow pack in our area is very low, and the stream crossing are easy.”

Reading Fire Burn Area through Lassen Now Open; Clear of Trees and Snow

June 17th, 2013
By: White Hatter (Tom Weaver)

I hiked northbound from Highway 36 to Old Station June 10-12. This section is now completely free of snow, and the PCT through the Reading Fire area has reopened after being cleared of the many burned trees that had fallen across the trail. (I verified this with a Ranger despite seeing a sign to the contrary.) Further south there were dozens of trees down across the trail, but all could be quickly gotten around by hikers. All water sources noted on Halfmile’s maps are running well, plus others like the Badger Flats outlet stream. Kings Creek is a wet ford

Lassen/Plumas NF border to the Cold Springs

June 11th, 2013
By: Justin K

Hazard tree removal will be taking place between the Lassen/Plumas NF border and north to the Cold Springs Trailhead on Humbug Summit. Work starts the week of June 16th and will continue until it is completed. Hikers and equestrians should be aware of falling trees and related dangers as they pass through the area.”

Trail closure updates

Powerhouse Fire Closure

May 31st, 2013

This information is also posted on our blog at this link.  See the above link for current info. UPDATE: 6/14/13  2:50 pm: The Powerhouse Fire is 100% contained. Much of the PCT through the Santa Clara/Mojave Rivers Ranger District portion of the Angeles National Forest remains closed. Angeles National Forest informs us that northbound trail users should leave the PCT at  San Francisquito Canyon Road. Take San Francisquito Canyon Road north to Elizabeth Lake Road, then go west on Pine Canyon Road to the PCT. You might also choose to take Three Points Road north to Highway 138. For an option further removed

South Agnes Creek bridge closure

Sections: /
January 18th, 2013

The foot-log across South Fork Agnes Creek, near Hemlock, is broken and closed. PCT travelers can ford the creek if conditions allow. During high water, travelers can detour around the ford by hiking the South Fork Agnes Trail to Suiattle Pass. If the creek is low enough, staying on the PCT is the best option. The South Fork Agnes Trail has rotten boardwalks that are OK for hikers but not safe for stock. Hikers report that this alternate trail is brushy, in disrepair and hazardous.  Stock users should use the ford next to the collapsed log and use the PCT

Snag Creek bridge closure

Sections: /
January 18th, 2013

The bridge at Snag Creek, just east (trail north) of the 2000 road (Red Bluff Road), is broken and closed. During low water, hikers and equestrians can ford the creek. At other times, travelers should follow the signed detour. View and print a map of the Snag Creek detour.

Muddy Fork bridge closure

Sections: /
January 18th, 2013

The temporary hiker bridge across Muddy Fork is damaged and closed. All trail users will need to ford the Muddy Fork at the equestrian crossing or detour around the crossing. BEWARE: This can be a difficult and dangerous ford, especially during periods of high runoff! Do not enter the water if it looks dangerous. A detour could include heading out the Ramona Falls trailhead road, heading up to the Top Spur trailhead and then rejoining the PCT where it intersects with the Timberline Trail.
