Join SCA and the Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA) for a week of fun and service in the Sierra Nevada. The project will utilize SCA alumni’s trail building experience to provide much-needed repair on sections of the Pacific Crest Trail. Come to renew your love for this wonderful National Scenic Trail or to build a newfound relationship.
There are two potential projects for the work crew. The final project will depend on interest and timing. Each crew will consist of eight SCA alumni led by a PCTA crew leader and other local site volunteers. The US Forest Service is funding this volunteer work crew through the PCTA and everything is provided, so your only expense is travel to the site!
May 25-31, 2008 - Sequoia National Forest, near Bakersfield, CA
Working south from Kennedy Meadows Campground on the east side of the Southern Sierra
Meet at Kennedy Meadows Campground in time for dinner that evening. Spend the first night getting to know each other and sharing your SCA stories at the campground. In the morning, the crew will embark on a backcountry journey approximately 4 miles into the South Sierra Wilderness in the Inyo National Forest where they will set up camp. Throughout the next 5 days, the team will construct rock drainages, log out dead and downed trees with crosscut saws, repair eroded tread, and reconstruct retaining features.
August 2-9, 2008 - McCall Basin, Goat Rocks Wilderness, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, WA
Pack-in (with the assistance of stock) eight miles to establish a backcountry camp in spectacular McCall Basin. This remote portion of the PCT has suffered the effects of neglect and erosion. The crew will take on a good variety of restoration work, including re-digging slipped tread, controlling drainage, building check dams with rock or log, and reconstructing switchbacks along several miles from McCall Basin spur to Elk Pass.
All tools, instruction, kitchen supplies, water supplies, and food and beverages will be provided during the trip. The only cost to you is your travel to the meeting site. Please bring sturdy work boots, long pants, long sleeves, rain gear, personal camping gear, sun protection, work gloves, and cold-weather gear with you.
If you are interested, email Katie at the SCA with the location you wish to attend. Call 510.832.1966 x303 or email with any questions. Hope to see you on the trail. |
