The PCTA has a system of 5 Regional Coordinators (Southern
CA, Central CA, Northern CA, OR and WA) who oversee roughly
500-600 miles of PCT). Within each Region we have multiple
Area Coordinators who often oversee a segment of the PCT within
a particular Forest, Park or Resource Area. Between the RC's
and the AC's, they coordinate volunteer projects, work with
our agency partners and other groups, assist trail adopters,
gather work reports and monitor the status of trail, typically.
For information on either the Regional Coordinator or Area
Coordinator opportunities send us an e-mail by clicking here.
PCT Speakers Bureau/Ambassadors
Many PCT hikers and riders, whether they've done the entire
trail or just segments of it, often give slide shows about
the trail and their experiences. If you are one of these people
and you'd like some PCT and PCTA brochures to pass out during
your presentations, please let us know.
The PCTA also wishes to develop a speakers bureau, a list
of volunteers, who can give talks about the PCT and the PCTA
in response to requests for presentations. For PCT and PCTA
materials for your own slide presentations or to become a
member of our PCTA Speakers Bureau, send us an email by clicking
here.
Conference And Event Volunteers
Additionally, we often need volunteers to attend local, regional
and even national hiking and equestrian events, meetings and
conferences, manage the PCTA display and to give out PCT information.
For details on these events, send us an e-mail by clicking
here.
Trail Register Monitors
PCT trail registers are located at dozens of locations along
the trail. We need volunteers to monitor these and to make
sure that new registers and information is available in each
location in the spring. For a list of register locations and
volunteer monitor opportunities send us an e-mail by clicking
here.
Trailhead Parking and Road Crossing Inventory and Assessment
In the fall of 1998, the PCTA began an inventory and assessment
of all trailheads and road crossings along the PCT. With the
help of additional volunteers we hope to complete the project
by the end of 2000. The inventory and assessment involves
filling out a simple field form and taking slides or prints
of existing trailhead and road crossing features (parking
area, signs, bulletin board, sanitation facilities, underpass
or overpass, highway signs, trail signs, etc.).
Volunteers can sign up for one or more trailheads or road
crossings in CA, OR or WA. For a "Trailhead Parking and Road
Crossing Inventory and Assessment" send us an e-mail by clicking
here.
PCT Easement Assessment
The PCT travels across approximately 300 miles of private
land on permanent easements or rights-of-way that are typically
10-30' wide. The PCTA, with support from the Dexter Environmental
Foundation, the National Forest Foundation and the US Forest
Service, has undertaken an effort to collect and assess all
the easements.
The easement inventory phase, done in cooperation with all
agency partners, is complete. Volunteers are now needed to
assess some easements, a simple field form and taking photos.
Basic map reading skills are necessary. For more information
and to volunteer send us an e-mail by clicking here.
PCTA CrestFest Volunteers
The PCTA hold a special weekend event, known as CrestFest,
for it's members each fall. Locations vary. Volunteers are
needed to help with the meals, registration, trip leading,
slide shows and workshops. For more information or to volunteer
send us an e-mail by clicking here.
Volunteer Land Use Planning Monitors
The PCT passes through 24 National Forests, 7 National Parks,
5 CA State Parks, 5 Bureau of Land Management Resource Areas
as well as other public and private lands. There are a multitude
of land development and management plans, environmental assessments,
Wilderness Management Plans and specific project environmental
assessments or list of proposed actions that constantly need
to be reviewed by PCTA staff and volunteers.
Many environmental assessments or proposed actions do not
specifically include information on whether or not the timber
sale, road or other project is actually on or near the PCT.
Thus we need people who live near or know particular Forests,
Parks and Resource Areas, who can read the planning materials
and red flag those that may affect the PCT. You can be the
"eyes and ears" for a segment of the trail. PCTA staff and
our Public Policy Committee can then develop formal responses
to any proposals that might affect the PCT.
For information on becoming a Volunteer Land Use Planning
Monitor and signing up for all planning documents for the
Forest, Park or Resource Area of you choice, send us an e-mail
by clicking here.
PCTA Office Volunteers
Volunteers are always needed to assist with membership mailings,
work on the PCTA archives, do database entry and assist with
PCTA Store shipments at our office in Sacramento. For more
information or to volunteer contact send us an e-mail by clicking
here.
PCTA Magazine And Website Writers
Volunteers contribute most of the articles and photos to
the PCTA magazine The Communicator, some of which are then
used on our website. For more information on publishing deadlines
for the magazine or how to contribute articles or photos,
contact: Angela Ballard, Editor. To e-mail Angela, click here. Or call her at: (916)-349-2109
ext. 19.
PCTA Volunteer Photographers
The PCTA welcomes contributions of slides and photos to expand
our collection. We use images for presentations, articles,
brochures and displays. Images about any and all aspects of
the PCT, hikers and equestrians and those who maintain the
trail would be of interest. If images are used in any publication
we will give credit to the sources. To donate copies send
us an e-mail by clicking here.
Volunteering With Cooperating Agencies and Trail Organizations
Finally, in addition to the PCTA volunteer programs, some
agencies offer volunteer opportunities, as do many of our
fellow hiking and equestrian organizations. For information
on these we suggest that you contact the agencies and organizations
directly via one of the links offered elsewhere in our website.
If you are already volunteering with the PCTA...thank you!
If you are not or you'd like to support our public service
programs, we hope to hear from you soon. Happy Trails.
