Congressman Howard "Buck" McKeon commended for
outstanding achievements towards the protection of the Pacific
Crest National Scenic Trail
September 10, 2003, Pacific Crest Trail Association, Sacramento,
Calif.
On Saturday, September 13, 2003, the Pacific Crest Trail
Association (PCTA) will honor Congressman Howard "Buck" McKeon
(R-CA 25th) for his consistent efforts to protect and preserve
the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail in the Agua Dulce,
California, region-and beyond.
Running for 2,650 miles, from Mexico to Canada, through California,
Oregon and Washington, the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail
(PCT) is a unique national treasure. One of the nation's first
National Scenic Trails, the PCT provides day hikers, equestrians,
weekend backpackers and long distance hikers with unprecedented
opportunities for outdoor recreation amidst spectacular landscapes,
including, in the Agua Dulce area, Vasquez Rocks County Park.
Unfortunately, in the town of Agua Dulce, the PCT was "temporarily"
routed along a once rural, now busy road. Recognizing the
danger such a road walk poses to hikers and equestrians, Congressman
McKeon has long championed the efforts of the PCTA, U.S.D.A
Forest Service and Agua Dulce community to reroute the trail.
Thanks to McKeon's efforts, the Forest Service has been able
to acquire the necessary Land Water Conservation Fund monies
to make requisite land purchases, from willing sellers, which
will allow the trail to be moved away from the road.
By championing this cause, Congressman McKeon has helped
to ensure the safety the PCT users, and the preservation of
open space in Agua Dulce as well as a corridor of access to
the PCT and popular Vasquez Rocks County Park.
Liz Bergeron, Executive Director, and Joe Sobinovsky, Program
Director, from the PCTA will be on hand at Agua Dulce's Wild
West Days this weekend to present Congressman McKeon with
an award showing appreciation for his dedication to the preservation
of the trail. Congressman McKeon will speak about the importance
of the Pacific Crest Trail at approximately 11am on Saturday
September 13, 2003.
The PCTA is the "The Voice" of the Pacific Crest National
Scenic Trail. The mission of the Association is to protect,
preserve and promote the PCT so as to reflect its world-class
significance for the enjoyment, education and adventure of
hikers and equestrians.
