Snakes, bears, fire, river crossings, and the tallest peak in the contiguous US?
Let’s work our way north and talk about what the Southern Sierra region of the Pacific Crest Trail has in store for hikers and equestrians this year. In our second installment of the “State of the Trail” StoryMap series, we’re walking you through the Southern Sierra to equip you with all the information you’ll need to know as you head north.
What to expect in wilderness zones, water availability, snowpack levels, and detours + closures to keep in mind throughout your journey. Our regional staff in the area, alongside our GIS Specialist, have skillfully compiled an interactive map with the most up-to-date information to keep you equipped on the trail. We’ve attached a few snapshots from the StoryMap below. Be sure to check it out and let us know what you think!
If you glazed over the part about last year’s bear incidents, here’s your reminder- this is bear country! In fact, the vast majority of the PCT in California winds through black bear habitat. As you enter the renowned Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Inyo and Sierra National Forests, and Yosemite National Park, you will need to pack all smellable items (food, toiletries AND trash) into an approved bear canister. More info at this webpage: Bear canister requirements and protecting your food
From tricky river crossings to improved trail access in some backcountry areas, there’s a lot to be aware of before you set out. A few surprises, some good, some requiring extra caution, await in places like Kings Canyon National Park. All the latest regional trail insights, updates, and safety tips are available in our full StoryMap.

If you’re jazzed on finding a new way to connect with these landscapes, come join us on the trail! We’ll be camping and working in some of America’s favorite places- like Evolution Valley in Kings Canyon National Park. Our staff and volunteer crew leaders would love to teach you about “trail eyes”, swinging a pick, or singing a saw.
