Northern California Trail Closure

Mosquito Fire near Lake Tahoe

Updated 9/22/22 at 2:25 PM

The fire has become much less active and the PCT is now open on Eldorado National Forest. The closure affecting the PCT in Tahoe National Forest is still in effect.

The Mosquito Fire is a large wildfire burning to the west of the Pacific Crest Trail. The PCT is closed closed between mile 1139.3 and mile 1140.4 south of Granite Chief on the American River Ranger District of Tahoe National Forest.

While the trail is open between these closures, accessing it near the closure boundaries will generally require substantial time on side trails. If you’re traveling through, the simplest option may be to go around both closures at once. Trail users heading northbound should leave the PCT on the Five Lakes trail (mile ~1136). From there, travel by car or bus to Olympic Valley and rejoin the PCT via the Granite Chief Trail (mile ~1142).
