There are black bears along the PCT.  Especially during huckleberry season, bears are reluctant to cede ground to competitors.  “Uphill” had a close encounter of the ursus americanus variety heading north along the PCT from Stehekin.  This occurred in mid-August of this year.  Here is his account:
